LOL, just to get this topic back on topic, I'm posting a spur gear that I used rust to coat it with, ran the rust in Noise > Spread a couple times, selected the gear and inverted and cropped the rust layer. Set the rust layer to Darken mode.

The original gear and the rusted one are together in the same image.

Looks really good, although the rust is maybe coating the gear a bit too evenly. Did you also make the gear?
