Hi guys, i need to know if i can, and how to use WINE in Fedora for all my Windows XP software.

I know wine can be used in Fedora but I don't believe all windows programs work with it. I think it will be a matter of trial and error. I can't remember how it works now but I think you right click on the exe and something like "open with Wine" appears in the menu. Don't quote me on this.

Rod I downloaded wine so I could use Xnview in Fedora. With Wine, you can run many MS Windows application on your Fedora Core desktop.

Rod, you can install wine as root from terminal using the following command..

yum install wine

or you can install via Add/Remove programs (yum GUI aka Package Manager) located in the apps list.

You can search for 'wine' in Package Manager to see a list of additional wine fonts and other wine addons avaiable in the Fedora software repositories.

It's like Erisian says, not all software can run under Wine. In many cases you have to install necessary libraries and many other do some workaround. Here you can find the compatibility of software that works with Wine, and users there also explain the workarounds:

To install windows libraries, "winetricks" makes things much easier:

You find out if you can install directly "winetricks" from the Fedora repositories. Or you do what explained on winetricks site: Download with wget, make it executable with "chmod +x" and then run it with "./winetricks".

there is a interesting variant of Wine QT4wine http://sourceforge.net/projects/q4wine/ the main difference are
1) it has a GUI
2) It allows to have more then 1 windows directory ( so you may as example use software that would be incompatible, i.e different version of same programs ,without conflict )

It is more simple to use but the set up was less automatic( no too complex; you just must confirm or correct the paths for your wine install,i.e the path for the wine executive, that for its libraries , where you want a virtual C drive(s)..)

It should be in the Fedora repository (even if i doubt they could have already the last version because was released few days ago,) so you don't need to compile, installation is automatic ...except that at a certain point you will have to confirm that few paths

Odin, is that also for fedora-64. I had it in fedora-17 but I got it from the repository.

i'm not sure Molly, all I know is Wine 1.6 is now stable. It might be at your repository, it wasn't at mine I used the terminal.

At the Fedora web site it says Fedora 19, Wine 1.6-rc2
Fedora 17 & 18, Wine 1.5.29

That is if you want to be able to use PhotoShop brushes isn't it?
Yup, that version is in my add remove for fedora19-64

Wine V1.6.1 was successfully built on Koji (Fedora's build system) on July 21st. It is currently available in the Fedora 19 update repos.

thanks Tux, I did see it there. Just deciding if I really need it or not. I didn't use it all that much when I had it before. There was just one photoshop app that I wanted to use so it worked for that.
