In my humble opinion, that site has always been a disaster, from a design point and from a moderation point.

I didn't know PC was connected to the gimp registry? Anyway, the biggest problem I've had is searching, regardless of how I word a search I have yet to find what I want. I haven't had much trouble with spam

Then the recent topics list should be done away with completely. All it is accomplishing is rewarding spammers by keeping their links posted (to be slurped up by the search engines).

AFAIK it was already Drupal-based... the problem is that they reinvented the wheel. The usual wheels (phpBB and cousins) already come with tools to counter spammers (built-in or plugins), and a more familiar/accepted UI...

I know nothing about webpage design, but a lot of big sites use wordpress and many others use phpbb. Wonder what Drupal allows that other tools don't?

There is nothing wrong with Drupal as a CMS, in the right hands. The database is another issue.

In almost every mysql management website or database configured forum there is a way to make sure non registered members can not post.If they are going to allow guest posting they need a decent Captcha system.One that asks questions and needs an answer to allow registration or guest posting.
I have one that actually is a face (like MR Potato Head), and you have to build it in order to register.
This forum utilizes the same idea.Since it's implementation there has been very little spam.
