@PhotoComix - I assume you are on Win7 *CORRECT*?
@ b10h4z4rd, Samj, everyone-else: Anyone have success getting Help to run from either Photcomix 2.8.1/2.8.2/Samj-2.8.2-1 (those are the versions I have on disk currently) on WinXP?.

so - only outstanding issue I know is what's wrong with the HELP system. If /when I get a chance tomorrow I'll copy your 2.8.2 from WinXP to my Win7 laptop. (I researched a little more and it looks like its a Vista/Win7 feature only.

Found this MSKB article that indicates it does/can apply to WinXP and that one of the file types it can be applied to is .CHM
Also that "group policy editor" can control (in a fashion I haven't figured out yet) whether the option to "block" is automatically applied and even whether the option to "unblock" is even presented.

It refers to something called the Attachment Manager (who knew!):

[Edit add: Its just barely possible that the fact you send .7z instead of .zip matters but I suspect that's unlikely. [/Edit add]

When I installed PC_Lab 2.8.2 to a subfolder, I would get an error when trying to use help that it couldn't find a file. When I put it in my c:\ root directory it worked good.

I am also running XP SP3 32bits and I have a block/unblock button. On a jpg that I downloaded, I right clicked and selected properties. It is located at the bottom of the General tab, below advanced. I haven't seen it yet on other files but jpeg, but I have only looked at a few.

@bilbo

bad that you too had problem with the help, glad you solved but your solution doesn't give me any hint for a fix (my local copy was not directly in C but in C:/Users/My name/Documents/... so a very different path)

I hope Samj could give a look to the problem , well actually the 2 problems a possible permission issue with the main .chm file that prevent the help to be executed but without popping warning or error messages, just blocking silently the bat files

and the broken path you refer

humm just by curiosity, you say it work in C ...could you check if would also work in E (or how your USB drive /external drive is called)

Bonjour,

For proper operation programs around Gimp you should not extract the archive to a directory whose name contains spaces or accented characters.
I recommend extracting in the root of a hard drive or a USB key.

:bump uploading now a improved version

changes :

1) Cage tool bug fixed and gegl operations restored

2) Gmic updated to 1.5.1.9

3) A lot of menu cleaning up

so many script and plugin authors try to add the most different menus and submenus, and their cumulative efforts tend to transform the gimp menus in really complex labyrinths
I tried to limit this as possible removing the most superfluous and bizarre additional menu and submenu

4) better selection of scripts and plugins

(several removed , several other added)

5) Restored the bigger preview for Gimpressionist, Map Object, Lighting effect, Depth merge, Fractal Trace

6 )Save+ Export , now is installed globally

there are so much complains about the new Save and Export policy and i found the script a perfect solution and a time saver
And will not leave any excuse for forgetting to save the original as xcf:
It is true that allow to do both, but Save is done first and is compulsory, Export is optional
So no way to forgot to save using it

For only export there are good old File/Export and as excellent alternative "Save for the Web(RIOT)"

7) Save for the Web(RIOT)

It was a little problem in the previous version ,fixed now

8 ) now Gmic is installed only for "PC_Lab" mode

For a very good reason, Gmic is updated very often
Maintain all its files in a dedicated subfolder inside "PhotoComix" (the folder that contains all the third part addon and tweaks )
make much easier to update :cool (to update without have to fight with lost, orphans or duplicated dll... :gaah )

PS about Gmic, in this version is fully portable:
the gmic definition files are stored internally (in "gmic-filters" folder) instead then externally as usual
Also i did a filters refresh before start packaging so all additional gmic filters from external sources are available out of the box

-------------------------------------
For the Mods

This topic may end here, i will open a new at soon the file is on the server
I believe this testing phase concluded and the next version sufficiently mature for a new phase

@Photocomix - I was going to post this as a rely to your post on [Mysterious 2.8.2-1 update in Windows release of GIMP] but wound up covering some other stuff so am putting it here instead. Ooops ... got warned when previewing and saw your post of new version -- I assume still in process as no link in the post or is it the original.

Anyway - read following in case it sheds any light. I'll try to find a new thread when it gets started.

Yes, I did.
OFFTOPIC - how do monitor for replies to topics you are following?
I set [Subscribed] and can see them in [User Control Panel] - [Manage Subscriptions] and check for new entries but was expecting/hoping to get an email notification. Not happening and I see nowhere to turn them on.

I also added http://gimpchat.com/syndication.php to my Thunderbird News lists but that seems to send only the first post in a topic (unlike the RSS for the Flickr-GIMP and Flickr-GMIC which send everything but unfortunately not threaded)

I believe the folder went not lost for a incident , because the release note talking of "Removed gegl operations only duplicating functions and adding bugs" and the lost folder contain all the gegl operations ...can't be a coincidence
anyway seems evident that the removal was a error and place it back fix

Did you see the attachment in my reply ?
I saw the one for RIOT but had worked around it - the installer put the required riot.exe + riot.dll in the correct place. It was just a matter of deleting the riot_plugin.exe.

wrt to the gegl-0.2 folder I just copied from your 2.8.1.
Quote:
I did play a bit with the cage tool, still i don't handle too well but didn't crashed yet
My experience too. As soon as the folder is moved in everything just work :-)

re location/name of the top level folder: I had no spaces or special characters but did have periods in GIMP-PC_Lab-2.8.2-32bits so changed it to GIMP-PC_Lab-2_8_2-32bits
ie. its now at:
D:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMP-PC_Lab-2_8_2-32bits

When I ran it and checked HELP preferences I notice that Help browser to use has been "reset" to [GIMP help browser]. I assume that the name change to remove the periods triggered the maringouin_2_8.exe to rebuild from .INI files because previously stored folder/file refs are not relative and hence are no longer valid.

Now this is just weird. After restarting GIMP I hit [F1] and gimp_2_8_en.chm opened! I thought that somehow the stripping of periods might have done the job - not so fast!!

I closed the HTML Help and tried a shift+F1 with fingers crossed.
Sigh ... no response ... help.exe is shown as a process with no window as a child of gimp.exe by process explorer.
I killed help.exe and retried just [F1] - this time no response.
Closing and re-opening GIMP then retrying [F1] again no response.

No idea why it worked the first time above and then never again.?
Anyhow, I'll post this then try copying my WinXP Portable GIMP folder over to my Win-7 laptop to see it it behaves any better there...

Results if any later ....

Fine you replied

I may eliminate dots from the file name just to be on a safe side

Now in this version was still the gimp browser even if was removed long ago from the normal build but will fail to open a chm help even if will try (i keep just in case of somebody preferring to use the standard help in the standard gimp format, even if as far i know such help doesn't exist yet for gimp 2.8 )

But the internal browser can't display well the CHM help, must be used the web browser

Upload on sourceforge is painful slow (and no seldom abort) so it will take its time and i will not open new topic before to get the download link and have tested the integrity of the uploaded file

Help works perfectly on my Win-7 system. YIPPEE
I notice in Process Explorer that on [F1] or shift+[F1] Help.exe fires first and about 1 sec later KeyHH.exe fires. If when the Help window is closed the KeyHH.exe closes but help.exe remains running.

FWIW - I've never seen KeyHH.exe run on the WinXP system.

[Edit add - after reading your previous about upload in progress] I figured that was likely the case. I'll wait till you announce successful upload. While you wait .... any comment about my off-topic question on how to monitor new posts to gimpchat .... i.e. is it possible to get email notifications of new posts to "subscribed" topics? hem it is the fact that still i didn't find the right setting for FileZilla to use Sourceforge SFTP

I badly need to found how to because only FTP allow a checksum, and to resume download, that is always useful but almost essential for huge files.

Anyway i am still slowed down by a painful slow and not too reliable html upload

If anybody here is able to translate the instruction here https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/sourc ... wnload#SCP in something i may use with FileZilla i will much appreciate the help

Also it will avoid potential problem for corrupted files :
my previous attempt broke at 75% :hoh but for some reason was accepted :gaah and the file , even if obviously mutilated of the 25% was available for download :wh
(available only for 15 minutes ,at soon i noticed i deleted, but that was too bad ..luckily no downloads were reported in that 15 minutes)

Have you tried WinSCP

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wins ... p?download

I have found it easier to use than Filezilla and the author is MUCH more helpful.

@Photocomix: I (and three others) have your latest 32bits version as at 2012-09-06 15:42.
Thanks very much.

very minor - your gegl-0.2 has for every somename.dll also somename.dll.a and somename.dll.la I think these are artifacts of the linking process by who ever compiled them (samj?) and not necessary for the running GIMP. They were not present in the "installable" GIMP-2.8.2-1. Definitely no need to "fix"

Some of your plugins seem to have slipped back a version. Was that deliberate?
see http://screencast.com/t/4vNBm7oDkZ
left-side = current RC1 | right-side = the prior version

Help: still not working on *my* WinXP system but does work on *my* Win7 system.
I going to let this remain and just work around it.

sure would be nice to get a 64 bit system so I can deal with a whole new set of problems :geek

you are a good observer...yes that is deliberate , more that to the prior version they do not belong to the same build because is the group of plugin with enlarged preview (the original were in my opinion too microscopic to be usable )and were compiled by others

are old plugins that had never a change (except that applied to all when passing from 2.4 to 2.6 and then to 2.8) so thire code in older and newer 2.8 is always identical...well in this case there is the only change from the original gimp source code, the hardcoded preview sizes increased of 4x )

looking now in xp..the first thing i noticed is that the preferences i set up for " use the web browswer" was reset to the default..for some reason apparently are not preserved

Actually i focused the attention on the 32bit version but i will soon apply same updates to the 64 bit version

PS about the help

not sure were you unzipped and placed the file ... but if in Document ,or even "desktop" then will be clear why in 7 works but not in XP:

in 7 C:/Users/Username/Documents/Gimp...
but in XP C:/Document and Settings/Username/Documents/Gimp... :
in 7 path are no blanc spaces (if not seldom i "Username") but in XP path are 2 blanc spaces

How many plug-ins / scripts folders can GIMP recognize?

I haven't googled or tested yet but vaguely recall discussion of a maximum limit on number of "known" Preferences - Folders - {Scripts | Plugins}. I thought I remembered the maximum being 15 but per below it must be a least 16.

Your PC_Lab Win32 portable 2.8.2 "install" already has 15 Plug-Ins folders set up in Preferences. Scripts also has 15.

In D:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMP-PC_Lab-2_8_2-32bits\pref_1 you have 22 empty folders ready for use but not "enabled" in Preferences - Folders. This is sensible though it took me one wasted close GIMP / reopen GIMP to figure out that this is what you had done.

So far, I've only added a couple of Python singleton plugins in ...\pref_1\plug-ins and verified that they get correctly noticed during the startup routine. If I wind up installing a more complicated plug-in (multiple exe/dll/help etc) which I would want to put in a separate sub-folder (e.g.) ...\pref_1\plug-ins\complex_A or ...\pref_1\plug-ins\complex_B ...

I wonder what the maximum (if any) is?

I assume the only folders categories where this might be a problem is Plug-Ins and Scripts.

As far i know is not something documented

The Limit i found is 16 for all the pref folder, but 15 is more safe:
because if you add to the 16th a 17th path (or more) also the 16th will stop to work ,because a formatting error that glue any other path to the 16th

So 15 will always work, the 16 will work only if there is not a 17, if there is both will fail

And alas no not only plugin and script also brushes, pattern and everything else (at least on Windows)
I believe the only way to bypass the problem is use some resource managers (GURM the most know, MareQ modified resource manager allowing to load also zipped folders ,you will found the detail in the script board, it is a looooong topic on resources managers)

BTW i updated the 64bit , i am testing now a new installer (thank to Partha) for the 32bit and if works well as it seems also for the 64bit

I wondered if I was being too cryptic when I said only Scripts and Plug-Ins would be a problem. I meant that those were probably the only two where users would be likely to run up against the limit.

Seems bugzilla worthy to me ... especially if 17 and 17+ just fail w/o notice to user.

Would you like me to file a bug quoting these two posts?

If / when I want to add a 17th or 18th I'll investigate GURM and/or (more likely) pick one of your "pre-installed" Plug-in folders to disable ;)
