i was very reluctant to change from GIMP 2.6 to 2.8
i like to stick with what i know and i especially disliked 2.8, because it had the filesize bug when you wanted to save as jpg
thats why i had both versions installed, but used 95% of the time GIMP 2.6

when GIMP 2.8.2 came out it deinstalled version 2.6 without warning but i havent looked back since
its a nice program and much more stable

about the brushes: why would some of them stop working ?
the filetype is the same.....

i recommend saving your GIMP userfolder before you change to 2.8.2, so that you have everything saved
installing plug-ins shouldnt be a big deal, there are only two possibilities where to put them, i think:
programs or userfolder
just make sure you really have everything saved before you upgrade

For me, I've looked at the features described on the release note: http://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.8.html and I can't see anything there that compels me to feel I must start using 2.8

To put that statement in context, I use GIMP to tweak photographs, so I wouldn't describe myself as a "high-end" user.

when the waiting time grows too much expectancy raises and are easily delududed

i like most of changes, and the new brush engine is very promising ... alas the older was much more fast and responsive but hopefully this will be fixed.

Aboutl GEGL and all expectancy about GEGL as now is hard notice any practical advantage , still 16 bit is not supported, and for the rest most of the interest on a "node graphical editor " derive to the possibility to graphically combine nodes and to support a macro recorder...but alas seems a there is not any even embryonic trace of tool to graphically combine the nodes and even less of a macro recorder , not even the most vague hint of interest to include such fundamental pillars when planning and building this new "Gimp with GEGL"

And i really fear that if will try to grow more without make grow fast and strong those 2 pillars ( Action Recorder and Node Composer ,both with a well designed GUI (here i would like see Peter sikking , the GUI guru at his best !) will just ruin...

Really too bad that the support for a Node Composer and Action Recorder is not even planned at the most embryonic stage and thatstill GIMP with GEGL is not able to open and even less to edit ,16bit
( ..this while 32bit is less and less rare )

I think the announcement about the end of this year's GSOC suggests that it may be closer than you think, especially the screen shot that was linked to in the comments: http://i.imgur.com/cD6Fw.jpg

That is a good new Kevin

but i think it should be seen no as a sort of collateral project that has some hope to be successfully concluded soon or later

but as something really essential because there are things that if not well planned at beginning become much more harder later

To make a example you would not like first paint nicely all the walls of new your house, then place nice brand new parquets and carpets in all the rooms , and finally, as very last , call the plumbers to add the water piping system and the electricians to add the electric one

As the Plumbers and the Electricians even the Node_ Composer Boys should be called in time or they may find to have no space to work without breaking what already was done

...and you trust their announcements after 2.8? I waited eagerly since the first time 2.8 was announced only to be disappointed then when it did come out there was nothing new and exciting about it for me. The only advantage was the new text tool but that was outweighed by a number of disadvantages including how slow it is. I'm sure a lot of people get something out of it but it's not for me - I still prefer 2.6.11. Nothing against the Gimp development team but I seriously think they should stop anticipating dates until they're close to completion.

I was also reluctant to download Gimp 2.8, in fact I just did it a few days ago. But instantly I recongnized the benefits:

1. Powerful text abilities: I can now style to the texts (such as bold, italicize). This was a basic feature that previous versions of Gimp never had.

2. Able to export as pdf: I was never able to export as pdf before; I would have to save the images and open them as a word doc and then convert that word doc to a pdf. It was a hassle.

3. The layout. Really, it's so much better than before. I can see everything more, all the layers are right there for you to see.

Those are the three major benefits that first popped out at me.

So there you have it...

Did you see the screenshot ?

Ok is just a very first prototype but doesn't look so promising... at least nothing of edgy or innovative

And i hope that the only 1 slot for input and input at each node are in the example to simplify , would be awful a limitation to a single input and output for node, on that basis that thing would born obsolete as a archaeological find
