With a couple of threads already discussing 3d scripts, I thought I'd have a bash using the paint tool and a path.

Basicaly I made my text then bump mapped it, copied it so I could use it as a brush, then created a path from the centre of my original text to where I wanted it to end.
opened the brush dialogue set mode to behind and made sure my text was selected as the brush and in the brush dialogue spacing was set to 1, then I stroked my path.
Blurred the outcome so it wasn't quite so blocky.

Anyways what do you think of the results, lots of possiblities using paths for direction and curving.

interesting technique, you know a lot of the finer details how to use Gimp !

it doesnt look very three dimensional to me and i think thats because it goes up from the text in a very steep angle and then swooshes into the background

its like there are two time frames trapped in one picture

Me to Esper. I don't know what most of the settings do in a lot of the scripts. That is an interesting effect.

i like how most of the stuff you make, is so positive and colorful !

Decided that maybe the first image wasn't the best demonstration so have included another with offset set at 0,36 & 72 degrees

I thought I would try the black text again with a 3 pixel white stroke. Works very well cuz the filter uses the stroke for the 3-D thickness. If you use a red stroke, the thick or 3-D part will be red.

Try GMIC>Rendering>3D Extrusion it works very nicely on plain black text.Then just colorize the layer.

so that was there all the time, but nobody mentioned it ?

i tried using the script, but im getting weird effects which is quite frustrasting

downloaded the G'Mic reference pdf, but there are no instructions how to use this script (or so it seemed to me)

am i missing something ? i need a manual with explanatiosn what each slider does

If you are on Linux use an editor and copy this line into your .gmic_faves file.(its in your home directory)

Make sure its all one line (no spaces), and no white space either.
If in windows your .gmic_faves file will be in your Application Data folder.
Restart GMIC and you will find it in your faves list as 3d extrusion-Text.
Study the settings and you should be able to mimic it with your own text.
Depth controls the extrude width.

im not on Linux i use Win7

the problem isnt that i cant start G'Mic - G'Mic works for me !
the problem is, i dont know how to use the script to get goodlooking 3D text

i played with the sliders and i have no idea what most of them actually do
thats why i was asking for a manual

what is FOV ?
what is Specularity ?
what does Resolution ?
what kind of unit is size displayed in ??

If you read above i stated if on windows its in the Application Data folder.
I wanted to make sure everyone could use it.

This is just a fave, a preset of the actual script in GMIC.
This is just so you can start out with pretty decent settings and then go from there.

As for settings i will let David explain those.

Rod that's really cool, thought I'd have a go, used white text. Now I've no idea what I did but my results come out looking like this, OK not the intention, but pretty cool anyways.

Seems to be text colour, white gives the effect below and black just extrudes the text.
