There are, literally, hundreds of techniques used in the creation of text logos.

This is probably going to sound ridiculous but begin at the beginning.

And then take a look at the Scripts and plugins section of GimpChat ...

there a lot of scripts in Gimp 2.8.2 that lets you create buttons and text effects/logos more or less automatically

some are under file -> create

you can always download more scripts and install them, to get more effects but as Mike already said, you have to learn the program anyway

i like to recommend the video tutorials by tutor4u on youtube, because they are easy to follow, you learn a lot in each lesson and you end up with a satisfying result

but there is always a learning curve

i dont need to know how to make logos i need to know how the site is using gimp ie sending commands to gimp. Anyone good with gimp and linux could work with my coder.

The typical way of doing this is to have your website's CGI program open a TCP socket and communicate commands to GIMP using Script-fu server.

I have not done this with a website, however, I have written a Perl extension to the LiVES video editor which uses GIMP as a backend to implement various filters. The approach is described in excruciating detail on my secret weblog and my code is available at the RFX-GIMP project's Fossil repository.
