So i just tried installing Gimp 2.8.2 and i get this error message.

GIMP cannot be installed over your currently GIMP installed version.

The problem is, that i already deleted the gimp folders(all of them) mannually, not by the uninstall file(i had some problems with png extensions so i wanted a clean reinstall).

So now i get that message, and it doesnt help if i choose a different location to install gimp to, still get the same message, and since i have no Gimp folders or files i dont know why it isnt allowing the install.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just curious but what version was the previous gimp you manually removed.

If it was an earlier version, then it seems as though all files haven't all been removed, So I would try and I'm no expert at this reinstalling the version you removed then going for the upgrade to 2.8

It was something with 2.6

I dont know for CERTAIN but i think it was 2.6.5, however i dont have that version on my computer anymore, and gimp deletes the download files of older version.

First to be sure to see if are leftover you may need to modify the option in My computer/option for file and folders ,my computer is in Italian not sure if the terminology is exact anyway in the option for search files and folder you will found
1 don't show system and hidden files
while you need to see system and hidden files to be sure there are no leftover, so you must reset that

Then 7 usually is at 64bit so you should search leftover in both Program Files(x86) and Program Files
it may be also a gimp folder under C:Users/yourname/ but that should not disturb for install 2.8, anyway better if you delete that too

And to delete something from both Program Files folders you need to confirm or order as admin, if not is possible that the given command is not executed

you may also use a portable version or even as also the installer said install the normal version but pointing the installer somewhere else

EDIT
WAIT A MINUTE !

Try this first

1) RIGHT click on the installer
2) from the drop down menu that will pop out chose
"Run as administrator"

DONE ! (if you are lucky would be so simple )

I already did what hearty suggested and reinstalled the older version of gimp i used to have, and ininstalled it. After that the installation of 2.8.2 went as it should.

Thank you both, guess this is fixed and next person to have this problem will find a thread about it.
