Do you have to have Photoshop to use this filter?

No Alan; if you install PSPI (a GIMP plugin that allows you to run many (but not all) Adobe PS filters), this filter will work in GIMP.

I'll unzip that and put it in my Windows; Username\Gimp2.8\Plugins folder. And then I'll also download the Fine Touch pluggin and put that in my plugins folder. Then I'll be able to access it? Well I actually don't know how I'll access the plugin. Will it be in my GIMP filters folder somewhere?

I actually put PSPI in my user>.gimp2.8>plugins folder and all Adobe 8bfs in a subfolder within my GIMP user directory. You then need to add the location of your 8bfs from your GIMP drop-down menu in order for them to be seen by GIMP. It's located in your GIMP Plugins dropdown menu (near the bottom).

I could never get pspi to work with 2.8, but I have several other thing that run PS plugins so it's not a big deal.

It's wise to have a separate PS plugin folder for Gimp compatible PSPI plugins.
In Gimp
Filters menu, Photoshop Plug-in Settings, browse to your Gimp compatible Photoshop plugins folder.
C:\[path]\Your Gimp Photoshop plugins\

It's a piece of cake. I think Lyle mentioned about the fact that not all PS plugins work. Trial and error, if your keen, you win!

I'm not sure until I'll try with it, but the g'mic Smooth bilateral filter gets a similar result, like a paint.

I applied bilateral twice, default values en Outputmode default.

Yes; really like G'MIC's bilateral filter and use it quite often, but it's not as vexel as this new plugin gives.

The gimp posterize filter is very limited (or uses too few or jump to use too much colors without middle way ) but Saulgoode and RobA provided 2 good alternatives

i wonder if may be emulated in gmic...i believe it would be possible

Yeah, I did all that. pspi looks like it installs like it's going to work but never sees my plugins, all of which worked in gimp with 2.6

Did you go to the dropdown menu for PSPI and point to where your PS plugins are located at GMS? The dropdown menu for PSPI is located at the bottom of where your plugins drop menu is.

With the same pic "ut supra" I've applied Fine touch with radius: 50

Just as before I did, bilateral applied two times, first on source, second on bilateral layer (default mode).
In this point the problem is that the Kate's ring doesn't seem blur as in Fine touch filter.

At last I found that is obtained a more optimal by applying Smooth mean-curvature: Time step (:30), Iterations (:17) and Channel (:RGB)

Cool plugin - not sure what to do with it but it will make a nice addition to those I already have.

I'm also having problems getting PSPI to work with Gimp 2.8.

I load up PSPI, add the directory which contains my ps plugins, and click on OK. Close down Gimp and reopen it again. No ps plugins show up and when I load up PSPI again, the directories window is empty.

If it helps, I run Windows XP

It's in this situation that I see my poor capacities with the Gimp plugins.
It's the same for me, I have installed PSPI and photoshop plugins as indicated and showed by Odinbc and Lylejk.
But after several restart, I still not find any photoshop plugin in Gimp

i found a better solution run PS plugin with Xnview (http://www.xnview.com)

PSPI screw up the preview of most of the PS plugin, with xnview will be not similar problems and support more filters

There is a script ShellOut that allow to use Xnview (and similar)almost as if was a Gimp Plugin

And on the other side in xnview there is 2 option in the Xnview file menu "Open with associated Program", and " Chose associated program" ( my translation may be not perfect that that the sense ) that allow instead to send files to gimp when browsing with xnview.

anyway with its limits PSPI should work,
are you sure that you moved there the .8bf, the real filters and not the .exe (that for PS plugin are notthe filters but installers )
