Fonts

whats the best way to install my fonts, so i can use them in GIMP and Inkscape alike ?

i dont want to put them in the windows font folder (im on win7)

tried a google search, but no solution in sight yet

Can I ask why you don't want to put them into the windows font folder as this seems to be the best place for all programs to have access to them.

you could put them in your Inkscape fonts folder then in gimp preferences/folders/fonts add the inkscape fonts folder

your Inkscape fonts folder is located in \Inkscape\share\fonts

because i read that would slow down windows

Graechan's idea is a good one.
One other choice, I believe you use Windows, try AMP Font Viewer. What you do is have a separate "My Font" folder to store specialty fonts. When you want to use a font or group of fonts you fire up AMP Font Viewer select those fonts which get temporarily installed. When your finished using the fonts close AMP Font Viewer and the fonts are automatically removed from your system font folder. It's very quick and easy, one central location for all specialty fonts, leaves your system font folder always clean.

I don't know about Windows (I went from 200 to 900 fonts in my Windows fonts folder and it did not seem to slow it down a bit), but putting fonts in application folders may increase start-up time for those programs, since fontconfig scans font directories on your computer every time you start up a program. It is better to have them all in one place (for font management purposes too). If the serious font issues ever occur (like GIMP or Inkscape crashing), AFAIK, it's not the font location that causes the problem but the Pango/font_type relationship for the fonts without Unicode character mapping.
