Hi Silvio Grosso!
It looks really interesting (Win 32 bit-Krita 2.6 on Windows, the Next Step)
http://www.kogmbh.com/download.html
I installed the Win - and so far I am very happy!

ps. Any progress with the integration of GMIC for Krita?

No progress done so far from the G'MIC side, but I'm more and more attracted by the idea.
Maybe this is something I could propose for a GSOC project.

Krita - it's brilliant, "the younger child GIMP" (according to my humble knowledge).
GMIC - those are fused (TOP) accessories (all in one).
Why are the issues to make it connect ?

Hello everyone,

@ MareroQ: I am glad you like Krita.
At the very beginning of February, its next stable version (2.6) should be released.
At present, IMHO, its Linux version is much *more* stable though.

Naturally, Krita and Gimp have very different purposes since Krita is much more geared towards painting nowdays.

Needless to say, having G'MIC integrated into Krita would be faboulous.
You would have all its filters available for Krita's painters too.
Especially the new extraordinary filter Recolorize just to name one :-)

At present, for a GSOC I suppose you might even consider using the QT version of G'MIC (ZArt) since Krita is written using the QT libraries as well.
Unfortunately, from what I have gathered "googling", this QT version of G'MIC is still VERY sperimental :-(
Besides, I am not a developer and perhaps this last suggestion of mine does not make much sense in the end...

Best regards,

Silvio Grosso

My dream:
For ordinary users (eg do not have Adobe PS) is only a request:
- Add support for plugins in Krita
- The integration of GMIC for Krita
Are these dreams are real? When?

Hello MareroQ,

Regarding Krita I can testify that its development is very active (really!).
Lately, for instance, they have even released a version to be used on Tablets: its name is Krita Sketch.
However, as of today, you are forced to use this version with Microsoft Tablets - Windows 8 (Intel CPU)... :-(

Regarding a plugin system for Krita I have not read anything concerning this topic on the Krita's forum (and on its developer mailing list)
As usual with Open Source softwares every implementation depends on the interest of some developers to work on it...

To my knowledge, most developers' efforts regarding Krita are generally concentrated on the Brush engines (there are so many of them on Krita compared to other softwares: e.g. Gimp and MyPaint...).

For instance regarding Krita:
- it is multi-threaded and can use all cores in a multi-core machine;
- krita's internal format is whatever the user chooses, 8 or 16 bit integer, 16 or 32 bit floating point, hence it is possible painting in 16 bit RGB;
- you can import and export the Psd format;
- its set of blend modes is impressive;
- you can rotate the canvas while you paint and so on and so forth.

Krita is aimed to *professional* painters and naturally there is always a lot of work to do (bugs to fix, documentation to complete etc) :-)

Regarding G'MIC I suppose its developer wants to concentrate most efforts on his software instead of working for porting G'MIC on another application (namely Krita).
This is *quite* normal in my opinion :-)
However, I am confident that having G'MIC integrated somehow into Krita would give much more exposure to G'MIC as well (on top of making Krita even much more powerful than now).
Especially since Krita works on Windows now as well (even though its Linux version is much more stable IMHO).

As explained, I am not a developer and I do not how much work this would entail...
Usually, for achieving a great experience (not some quick hacks...) you need to invest a lot of time on this porting...
Surely, getting a talented student to work on this project during a Google Summer of Code would help a lot :-)

Best regards,

Silvio Grosso

I already commented on Flickr, i believe you chose the best by replacing with a new series of commands

For my filters i will do my best to update quickly

Even before the proper filters ,i would have to redo that group of "combined merging modes " that i used as component in many of my filters ,in other word as first step i would have to recreate 5 additional merging mode and to do it i should understand well the new -blend command

I'd like to be able to create a gmic plugin for krita but I just can't commit to it yet since I still have to learn c++ properly. For now I'm integrating gmic into a gui (only as a filter coding tool for myself NOT as a new paint program!) so I can figure what's involved. By the time I've learned enough to do the krita plugin I would hope somebody else has already finished! Something like this would really raise gmic's profile so I hope someone can take it on.

Back on subject, the blend command changes David have made are really great :yes

Read your post at Flickr, David. Sorry, if I caused you too much headache in the past two days.
I'm happy you got all this figured out, sooner or later it had to be done. And sooner is better than later.

Thank you.

Finally, I found a quick hack to make the new 'blend' mode fully compatible with current stables 1.5.2.0+
So, I'll update the blending filters soon !

EDIT : Updated, just press the 'Refresh' button and it should be there.

I've added some new blending modes to the 'Layers / Blend [standard]' filter, namely 'Red','Green','Blue','Soft burn' and 'Soft dodge'.
The description of these new blending modes can be found here.

cool, and thanks for the background info !

what is it with color burn/Dodge ?
that seems to be a mode that is used a lot in PS layerstyles - is there an equivalent in G'MIC or could one be made ?

@Esper : The 'soft dodge' and 'soft burn' modes are described here :

soft dodge : http://www.pegtop.net/delphi/articles/b ... /dodge.htm

and

soft burn : http://www.pegtop.net/delphi/articles/b ... s/burn.htm

To be honest, I don't have any intuition about the (soft or regular) dodge and burn modes. I've just recoded the formula, but I've absolutely no idea in which case it could be useful :D.
