the "glowing" stroke is because your dropshadow is above it
it should be under the base text, but its an interesting idea for an effect to work with in the future !

i also like the conical gradient fill for the layer as a shadow, thats a nice effect, too :hi5

heh, yes I did forget to make the outline the gradient and the black the fill. Another snafu I ran across was that I couldn't figure out how to make just the first letter bigger. I know you can edit any part of the text with the pop up editor, but I couldn't figure out exactly how to do it, even though I've done it before. *rolls eyes*.

highlight the letter and edit it in the little box above the text

I tried that, but for whatever reason, it didn't seem to work. I probably overloaded my memory with too many 'undo's'. I also had to go figure out how to get all the stuff under the 'myname' files to show up. finally figured that one out, the paths had to be corrected in preferences. I'm learning, slowly, very slowly, lol.

I am still out to sea on this step. (7. select your text from the saved channel)
Which one of these steps do I use to select my channel? Channel to selection, Add to selection?

the whole idea of the saved channel is just to have a backup selection of your base text
