Ello all. I have posted here a few times for gimp on windows. Now, i have a vm of 12.04 ubuntu with gimp 2.8 on it. The reason being, my wife wants to go back to school in graphic arts and wants to learn some things first before hand. She wants to learn gimp and inkscape. So i wanted to try out ubuntu with gimp so that she has to learn a new os and some other things. this will help her in the long run to help her think more critically. Here is where i need some help

which plug ins or scripts should i install onto gimp 2.8? how do i install them since i am new to ubuntu?

where in linux is the brush folder at so i can transfer brushes from my win machine to linux machine(vm)?

one last question for her. She is completly new to graphics and wants to find awesome tutorials that explain what is going on. IE what is alpha selection, color levels, and all the jargin. we do not have internet at our living place so if i could find a download of the user manual so she has an offline copy, that would be awesome. She has no idea what any of the jargin means. Hence why i want her prepared before starting school. w

Lol, thanks guys. my wife is excited for this but scared to. any help is much appreciated from her.

There are tons of tutorials related to Gimp and Inkscape.
Here's a few links to get started.
Essential GIMP Tutorials
Gimp Chat Tutorial Index
Gimp.org Tutorials
Inkscape Tutorials
Gimp and Inkscape
YouTube is full of video tutorials.

If you buy one Gimp book I highly recommend, The Artist's Guide to GIMP, 2nd Edition. The reason this one is so good is the author's expert knowledge and the way he structures the information for maximum use of all aspects of Gimp in an easily understandable way.

Of course have her come here and ask any questions she may have :gimp

There is an up-to-date English language PDF of the Gimp help files here, at the top, gimp-en.pdf

AWESOME!!! thanks guys. i have scribus, gimp 2.8 and now inkscape all ready to go in a vm that i will transfer to my offline pc. I have a few online videos i did with gimp 2.8 that i am gonna share as well. i found it easier to learn the gimp if i did a video capture of myself and spoke at the same time. i wonder if cam studio will record a vm machine within win xp..

thanks

About installing help and plugin script etc

If you installed gimp from a repository, with Synaptyc or what is the software manager in Ubuntu

AUTOMATIC

Launch again the software manager, type "gimp" in the search field, click to search and you will already find the help , a "Gimp plugin registry" pack with several useful plugin and script, other with extra brushes, gradients and more

Just mark what you want install , give the OK and will be done automatically

MANUAL INSTALL

much else is not included in the repository but available on the author or developer sites

For already compiled plugin (If you can't find compiled specifically for Ubuntu most of times also that compiled for "debian" will work ) , script, and all other addon

your gimp user folder is just in your Home directory BUT INVISIBLE

So
1)
as sudo open the file browser (i.e. from the terminal "sudo " followed by the name of your file browser )
2) in the file browser View/Display hidden files : go to "Home" where now the .gimp folder will be visible

3) add in the appropriate gimp sub-folders what you wish

4) CLOSE THE FILE BROWSER NOW !!
It would be dangerous use the file browser as sudo when not strictly needed !
