Thanks, Molly and O. The entire image is made of spirals, big and small. Sky, clouds, ground, lollipops. The only thing not spiral is the large lollipop stick. I wanted to see how it turned out.

@Lyle: To be honest, that garden is in your mind, since you started this. Hehehe, I just did a spin-off.

Micki, my lollipop was just made using circle selection with gradient set at swirl cw. You can set it at repeat (for either sawtooth or triangular) if you want, to add more swirls. I then added a new layer, set to difference, and applied the same effect with gradient, then merged the two layers together.

OK Molly; the secret to my lolly is using a seamless texture that recently created then running G'MIC's Sphere preset. I also dup, run Gradient Map (choose a very colorful gradient) on the Top layer and then do some layer manipulations to get the colors that I want.

Had to give Mahvin's idea a try. Did add Isophotes and Twirl to the mix.

You need to merge those layers visible before doing any more layer work, Lyle, or else the stick (or anything else behind it) will show through.

Plus, when I use your preset and G'MIC sphere, it cuts off the swirl, they don't line up. I've tinkered with all the settings it offers and doesn't change the cut-off.

The translucent (so some of the stick show's through) effect was intentional Mahvin.

Anyway, not sure why you are having this issue Mahvin. It's a seamless texture so your result should look like this.

I guess it's how I perceive seamless patterns/images. When someone tells me an image or pattern is seamless, I'm thinking it can be used at any resolution as long as the pattern is square and aspect ratio is maintained. Apparently, I am off in my thinking, at least in the transitioning from images that are currently seamless, to being used as a seamless pattern for "any" future image/background. I guess I need to explore this further.

I thought you might have intended to have it translucent (I was too lazy to edit and note that, but I did think it). I am glad you started this thread. I've been feeling a lack of inspiration for GIMP. Even with Christmas around the corner (can you believe it's almost here already?).

A seamless texture will remain seamless as long as it's size is a whole number multiple of the original tile (texture not necessary to be square). Once you tile it outside of this, your result, though looks right, will no longer be seamless (i.e., if you try to tile your new result, you will get the seams).

Sorry you have the Christmas Blues Mahvin. I sort of do too. Went Christmas shopping with Dad and we had a spat since I told him you are just going to spoil your grandkids/great grandkids with all the stuff you are purchasing (guess that means I'm a Grinch; lol). Hard to be happy when you are out of work too and I've been out of a real job since February with only some occassional contract work. Heard earlier that the unemployment rate went up to 9.8%. The real number of unemployed and underemployed is around 20% but you won't hear that (I actually suspect closer to 35% but I will accept the conservative estimate). For those who still have a job, count your blessings. I do hope Congress and the Whitehouse get their act together and put the priority towards job creation and not more BS. For my overseas friends, I do hope your country is in a better situation then the pickle we are in now.

Everyone's images are (dare I say it)... SWEET!

On mine, I created a seamless plasma layer (500x500) with Plasma 2.
Then, with G'MIC, I did cubism and duplicated it.
On the top layer of the two I did G'MIC B&W Pencil.
I set the top layer to Multiply and merged down.
I made the twirl with G'MIC, and cut off the edges with a 500x500 circle selection.
Duplicated the layer twice and desaturated the bottom one.
I gausian blurred the bottom layer and used it to bumpmap the middle one. (almost done)
I set the top one to grain extract and adjust the middle layers's opacity.
I merged the layers and adjusted the saturation.

My stick is just a cylinder made with map object of a white rectangle.

Oh Yeah, Christmas! I happen to love Christmas! It's what happens two weeks before that I am not to happy about. My 50th birthday is 2 weeks before Christmas. I'm getting old.

Stick is not hard 2-ton; I use Map filter and choose Cylinder. Done.
