so AnMal's work got me thinking

how would i make something iridescent ??

well there is this foil that shimmers in rainbow colours
and insect wings, like dragonflies....

so i fired up a google search, found some cool green bug wings and started gimping, trying to get a hexagonal shape into my object
but i must admit, i didnt get it right

i tried Drac's crinkle foil tutorial but that didnt help either

so here´s what i got and i wonder what would you do if you had to make something iridescent ??

EDIT: second attempt looks much better :)

esper: fun!!! :hi5 but i actually think the top picture is the better one. iridescent objects will seem to change colours when you move them about, and that's exactly what seems to be happening in that top picture. i think i've just been beaten at my own game :).

(by the way, was the secret a tarp as in tarpaulin? and why drag poor admiral ackbar into it?)

Oh wow, that green thing in the top picture is exactly what iridescent looks like in my mind! That is so awesome, I would love to know what was involved in getting that look....and yes, I'm still hoping for some info on how to do ombre

I agree with 2-ton. The green looks soooo cool.

Here's link to a photo of oil & water iridescence I found in a Bing search. Might give you some clues. I think shininess (is that a word?) needs to be a factor and then an overlay of color.

I did this using Graechan's water drops script. The gradient layer was set to Grain Extract. The background layer needs to be dark. It doesn't work with a white bg.

its complicated internet meme humour

Admiral Ackbar says "its s a trap !" in "Return of the jedi", but when you are in a hurry and write it wrong you get tarp, which is as funny as teh....
or so the internet things and a meme was born

esper: aha, capisco. (and no need to tell me what admiral ackbar says in what movie :hoh)
really is very annoying that you just got the iridescent effect right from the start and i had to try for so long.

Artshop's Irridescent filter. Still works fine in GIMP via PSPI (one of the few PS filters that don't crash in GIMP now; lol). Used a blend of this filter for this Chihuly inspired sculpter that I concocted just for you Esper. :)

Yes; cheated, but 90% of it was done in GIMP. lol

Used Flame Painter to create the source then copy rotate n-layer script-fu to create the object target (whirl/pinched the center). Then, I can't outline anymore since I used several things to cheat including irridencent filter (i.e., too lazy and need to get a few more hours shut-eye before my next work shift). Thanks for the comments. :)

lylejk: :wow - i think he4rty's wrong, that looks much better than expensive diamonds, it looks like high polished crystalline glass - and since i prefer glass to diamonds any day that's means i think it looks incredible :).
esper: that's cool! but i think you're crossing the line between iridescence and neon glow. reminds me a bit of the text effect tute i was supposed to post - i don't remember which of my unfinished folders that's in, i'll trot off and look for it.

Appreciate the feedback. In a past life, I must have been a glass blower from a well known guild since I enjoy glass ornaments myself AnMal. :)
