Hi, I`ve been trying to copy part of one pic and paste it to another. I am using the scissors tool. I`m Ok getting as far as the marching ants, and can even open a new file- layer - new layer- and edit - paste . I can even get the copied image to the new image. BUT - the scissors tool is still there and active ????????
How do I stop it from working, I would have thought as soon as I " copied it" it would guess it`s job has been done and go back to the Toolbox, but it`s still there.

Can someone help me please.

MODIFIED, I`ve just tried the free select tool and am having the same problem, HOW do I get the tools to finish their job and not stay active. ?????

Probably the quickest way is to click on another tool when it's finished doing what you want. You could also press the letter O and it will turn on the color picker which is an "innocent" brush and will do nothing.

The only tool that will remain active, is the one that is clicked with your mouse. When you click another tool, that tool will be active. easy-peezy.

Also you might need to Anchor the Layer.
Layer->New layer OR Layer->Anchor

Active tool in GIMP remains active even when you're done using it because GIMP doesn't know that you are.
You need to tell him. Mr. Wilber is a smart program but still can't read minds

Also I`m still trying to work the right way to do things, so far none are succesfull.
When I go to open a new file, there is a list of images I`ve already opened. I don`t want these to be there, as I`m only practicing, and there are already about 30 of them, how do I delete/ remove them from the list.

That's what I`m looking for, so I`m guessing there isn`t one.

Mr Wilber is the gimp mascot, so don't worry about that part.

The best way to remove your scissors selection is to go to the top menu "Select" and then click "None" in the drop down Menu.

To open a new file go to the top menu "File" and then click "New" a window should appear allowing you to set image size, then click Ok.

The only reason a list of previous files appear is because you have gone File>open recent, this then shows a list of previously open images and xcf files in gimp, If you click on the bottom part Named "Document History" this will either open up a new window or a new tab where your layers normally are, from here you can select and remove images or files.

Thank you, I have managed this now.
I will try again with the scissors tool later. I am still digging myself out of the snow here in North Wales !!!
I can`t believe I spent over two hours yesterday struggling to find how to do this cutting etc, and thanks to all you lovely people I am getting there at last , even if very S-L-O-W-L-Y.

Have you had a look through the gimp manual, really only describes the function of the various tools and stuff but could be of some use.

@wilcoxon...Besides all these tips, you can use the upload button to display your image and where you are having a problem. I am sure some one here can steer you in the correct direction.

Yes, I downloaded this when I downloaded GIMP. To be honest I can`t understand it, I don`t know what the terms they use actually mean.

To me a "curve" is a line that isn`t straight. and as for this -
"The Histogram dialog dragged to the left vertical docking bar of the right panel and the result: the dialog anchored to the left border of the right panel. This dialog now belongs to the right panel.
So, you can arrange dialogs in a multi-column display, interesting if you work with two screens, one for dialogs, the other for images. "

Is there a glossary or something that explains what these mean.

Just take one step at a time. Try some of the very basic tutorials in the tutorial section. If you try to start with something too complicated, it will confuse you more.
This is the only advice I can give.

Help, I am still stuck, I got as far as Edit and paste , but now I can`t move the selection, and it is too big for the new image.
I still can`t get rid of the colour picker tool that I selected to get rid of the scissors.

I`m getting very disheartened now, all the videos make it look so simple.

can you please save your xcf and post it here in attachments so we can see what it is you are stuck in.

I usually click on the rectangle select after using a tool as it will not do anything unless you add more options.
