Ok, somehow I have actually managed to do what I want. I missed the LAYER - TRANSFORM - MOVE- SCALE .

now I don`t know how to save it as a JPG. The video shows how , but I can`t do it. I can`t seem to find the JPG option. ?

To save file formats other than Gimp XCF,
Gimp 2.8x, File | Export..
Gimp 2.6x, File | Save...

I have a feeling that the video I`ve been watching is NOT the latest version of GIMP,2 .8

If you were watching the video by Jolie, no it is not done with GIMP-2.8. She made that video a couple years ago long before 2.8 came out.

wilcoxon: some things are different enough between 2.6 and 2.8 to make it confusing following a tutorial made in 2.6 when you're using 2.8 - but it seems you were able to do what you wanted to do anyway, so that's good

. hope your initial trouble didn't scare you off, gimp is a very good tool and it's fun to use once you're over learning all the basics.

I still haven`t found how to save to JPG, I must be missing something somewhere.

Were the earlier versions easier to understand, perhaps I may be better starting with that and moving up later to 2.8.
presumably it will run on Windows 8.

The difference between Gimp 2.6 and 2.8 is that you cannot 'save' as a jpg/jpeg. You have to 'export' it. Click on file then look down the menu for export. Not 'export to' unless you are overwriting something. Just plain 'export'. That should bring up a window for you to put your images name in. Mine does it by default to .png. You can delete those letters and put in .jpg, (or any other picture file) then click on export. I usually have to do this twice (or double click) then once on a small window that comes up.
