Question: Which nationality does he look like? I'm not sure.

I think this is my first WIP I've ever posted...Not sure but I think so.
Anyways...!

It's a king, I'm working right now in MyPaint but I will move to GIMP after it..or during..Not sure yet, I'm not used to using two programs for something unless I'm resizing. xD

He's not done...he looks done, but he's not I have some finishing touches still to do.


The actual size of it is much bigger but I re-sized it for uploading reasons...

What's a WIP? Work in progress?

Looks good so far. I think it may be worth taking another look at the length of the nose relative to the face. The nose seems a bit longish. Looking forward to seeing the result

MyPaint + GIMP work really well together, but I find switching back and forth to be cumbersome. Once I put a painting into "GIMP mode", it stays there. But I'm still using 2.6.

mokonafan: this looks fun! it seems to be heading in the direction of fairy tale illustration - which makes me think if i ever wrote that book for my future niece/nephew and my godchilren i'd know who to ask to illustrate it . looking forward to seeing this completed!

Aha well..I think the last time I used two programs was like in...2010, and it was paint for an outline and gimp to color...it looked so bad. XD

His hair is far from "finished" but I'm glad you like it thus far!
I wanted to make something stand out about him since I'm bad front views, men (drawing ), and idk the program THAT well so..Different colored eyes seemed good.

It's getting there Moko, nice to see the progression. Nice idea with the variably-coloured eyes!

One suggestion: Make sure to regularly mirror your image vertically and horizontally. This is very fast in MyPaint (it doesn't actually change the image, just display it to you differently), so set up keyboard shortcuts to do this easily. If you do so you'll notice the eyes are at different heights and are looking in slightly different directions at the moment. Also, he has a cartoon-cat-like mouth but otherwise looks human, is that intentional?

Switching between GIMP and MyPaint using the .ora format is fast and easy, I usually do so many times during the progression of an image, simply because MyPaint has so much better brushes than GIMP, whereas GIMP has all the adjustment features. Use the reload button in MyPaint to reload the ORA image in-place once you tweaked it in GIMP (sadly GIMP doesn't have the same reload functionality as far as I know, you have to open the image anew).

mokonafan: getting along nicely ! i really like his eyes and hair. and i'm even more sure who i want to illustrate my fairy tale book when i finally get it written . you're style is so right for that, moko, all your pictures really look like they're made with love! this king for example looks very likeable - and i really hope you don't want to change his cartoony mouth, because i think that kind of simplicity goes well with your style in general and i think it's just charming .

And I thought I was just stupid because I was wondering the same thing.

Ahhh I see about the eye, I tried to fix it but I think it still looks a little odd..But 2 different colors can also make it look odd too so...
So far using MyPaint AND Gimp has been awesomely fun, just enough challenge that I don't get upset but it's still exciting! One thing I wish about MyPaint is that it had the overlay feature.
As for his mouth, I draw mouths very simple and a little cartoonish on purpose, I still get the effect I want w/o the pain of ugly looking lips...They always look pasted on the face when I draw actual lips...

I've switched over 3 or 4 times already and I still have his crown to do...pays to be royal. xD

I'm not sure what you mean by the "overlay feature"? If you mean layer overlay mode, then I think that is available but you'd have to move towards the development version of MyPaint.

mokonafan: your king looks really good now, sister! i don't know what you're going to change when you complete him, but i have something on my wish list: a few big gems on his crown - i'm all for bling, as you know .
also, if you'll be doing anything with his ears, i think they could be made more similar in size and shape.

hehe, i wasn't going to post this until/unless i had it finished, but you did ask me what stories he was telling me, so here you go - it's the first draft of the first version of about a third of the story of the small king and the big ladybug.

That's looking great Moko. I love the purple you used.
