Hey guys, some might remember I like to play music, but atm am unable to but I wanted to make digital music (not the mainstream 1 beat and a few clap noises music lol)...Never have but I'm willing to try.
But I need a program, I don't believe in pirating things and I'm sure the opened and honest comunity here agrees with that. Does anybody know of any opened source or free programs?

I want something kinda like Fruityloops if that exists, I looked I can't find anything.
The free version of fruity loops lets me do almost zero.

I have that but from what I saw it's not like Fruityloops you have to have tracks already.

I started using acid music about 10 years ago. They have a really cool free program available and if you sign up for the forum they have free music loops every month I think.

Linux Multimedia Studio is free, open source, and can be installed on GNU/Linux, Windows, and according to the link Merrak provided, also Mac OSX. It is described as:

"LMMS is a free cross-platform alternative to commercial programs like FL Studio"

The demos link provides some samples of what others have created with the program.

If you happen to like creating drumming mixes, hydrogen is a good free open source program that runs on GNU/Linux, Mac OSX, and Windows.

I have used both. Just mentioning them in case they may be useful for you or something you are interested in checking out.

I'll second LMMS, I was just going to post that until I saw ccbar's. It's kind of like FL Studio or Sony Acid.

I agree with LMMS. It has plenty of instruments already included but If you pm me to let me know what kind of sounds you want to work with I can compile a list of good free instrument plugins for you to use.

I tried to download LMMS before but the zip wanted a pw or something and I couldn't install.

If your on Windows get the LMMS 32 or 64 bit file not the bz2 file.
If your on Linux you should be able to get it in your distro.

Most likely the password required was so that the installer could add the program to your Applications folder, or libraries to your System folder (both of which require Adminstrator privileges).

If the ZIP file itself was password encrypted, I would suggest getting the file from a different source. Free software projects don't worry about such things.

I would add that creating a digital audio workstation is a great way to put an older computer to good use. A 500MHz Pentium II running GNU/Linux with a couple hundred megabytes of RAM is quite capable at handling most audio processing tasks (though faster and bigger is preferable*). Having such a dedicated music computer would leave your main machine available for your other needs and provide a good learning experience (and most of the best free programs work better on GNU/Linux than Windows).

* If you ask around (churches, family, and friends), you should have no problem finding someone with a Pentium 4 system collecting dust which they would be glad to have you take of their hands.

I'm going to have to say no to that. A 500MHz computer doesn't even run most desktop environments well. If you want to playback realtime-synthed music, you're going to need something a bit more powerful than that.

You don't need a desktop environment for a dedicated DAW machine; a simple window manager such as Openbox or WindowMaker will work just fine and not bog your machine down with a bunch of bloat. All you need is to be able to run a half dozen different programs and a simple file manager.

Up until two years ago, the computer in my home studio was a 200MHz Pentium II. I liked this machine for recording because it had no fans in it. If I saved to a RAM disk while recording then it made zero noise, though the hard drive was quiet enough that I rarely worried about this.

With this puny system, I only experienced a few limitations. I couldn't use Timidity (a software MIDI sound generator) at the same time I recorded using Audacity. Timidity was fairly CPU-intensive and when running simultaneous to Audacity (with its waveform scrolling in realtime), I would get stuttering in the recording. I could, however, use Timidity with a command line recorder, or use my Yamaha soundcard's sound fonts while recording with Audacity. Based on this, I am speculating that a 500MHz machine shouldn't cause much grief at all.
