Post subject: "Open" SVG file vs "Open as Layers" SVG file [Answered]

GIMP Version: 2.8.1
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: Win 7 64 bit
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

Hi, I noticed a difference in behaviour between "Open' an SVG file and "Open as layers" the same SVG file.
When opening as layers, the paths do not import regardless of what I seem to do.
Works fine if I just Open the SVG file and tick import paths.
Is this functioning as designed? Or is it a bug?

I can't reproduce this on Win7 gimp 2.8.4.
My GIMP imports paths in both cases, as Open and Open_as_Layers.

After GIMP fails to load paths try to import paths from the Path menu>Import Path.
But if 'Open_file' works for you, why would you want to 'open as layers'?
GIMP does not support SVG multi-layered structure anyway.

You can also just drag and drop an SVG file straight from Inkscape into Gimp.
Didn't know if you knew that or not and thought it was worth mentioning.

Hi K1TesseraEna, thanks for testing this under your version.
It would seem then the behaviour has been modified then. :)

Thanks for the tip, I did not realise that 'Import' option was even there. :bigthup
After the paths failed to load with 'Open as Layers', I tried the 'Import', and it worked fine.

Some background for you - I only have two .SVG files on my computer, so that should give you an idea of my experience using SVG files
I found the issue when I was creating a sig.
I wanted to load that particular svg path and add it my image.
I was not aware of the 'Import' option you divulged earlier, so I tried to 'Open as layer' so I could get the paths that way... 'Multi-layered structure' - wasn't aware such things existed ;)

So thanks for clearing this up for me. I will use the 'Import' option in the future. :tyspin

Thanks Rod.
I downloaded my two .svg files from a website. I did not create them myself.
But if I ever choose to download and learn Inkscape, that drag and drop tip will come in handy ;)
(In the past I downloaded Daz Studio so I have been trying to learn Hexagon.)

You're welcome, FB!
Just in case you get into vector graphics, yes, you can create svg files with multiple layers in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator, but when you import them
to GIMP the latter does not recreate those layers, all bitmaps are placed in one layer. I wish GIMP could recognize svg layers, sometimes need to separate objects or background from the objects without opening svg file in Inkscape and making adjustments.
