This is a small thing, and I'll bet I'm missing something very obvious.

When you have layer groups, and create a new layer or layer group, it always goes into the group (even if the group is collapsed). How can you make a new layer above (outside) the layer group?

I can't find this in the manual and I've tried ctrl, shift, and alt in various combinations. You can always drag it out of the group and put it where you want it, but is there a more direct way?

If you have a layer that is not part of a layer group selected when you choose make new layer or layer group it will be created as a layer or layer group above that layer and not inside a layer group.

PegLeg44: Thanks. I'm guessing from your answer that there are no hotkey shortcuts for this.

No shortcut keys that I know of. There's right click the layer though. So if the layers are not present you could Ctrl + L to bring them up.
