Hello Everybody,

I need your advices, to make simple I will try to explain my situation.
I have a job which requires often to retouch some pictures or create backgrounds for professional presentations.
We are 8 to do the same job in my company, currently 3 of my colleagues use two licences of Photoshop installed on two laptops company's, 2 use Photofiltre, 2 use Paint.net and Gimp for myself.

During our weekly meeting, we have spoken with my manager, about the politic of Adobe for the next Photoshop release. This choice of Adobe has annoyed my manager who warned us that it would not pay two licenses in these conditions because it would be too complicated to handle for 8 users and especially more expensive for the company.

I have proposed to use Gimp instead of all programs, obviously the photoshop users were not motivated, but the others were agree to tested after a quick demonstration of Gimp.
My manager has asked me to do trainings and help them to install correctly Gimp.

I have a issue, because the IT department of my company have to validate Gimp, in order to allow us to install it on our computer but the process is long, so I think to use portable version of Gimp (from Partha.com) but before I start, I wonder which version is better to use. We have not the same configuration, Windows 7 for all but 32 or 64 bit according the location, ie in my case 64 bit at office and 32 with my laptop when I'm in travel.

Thus, I would like to provide the best Gimp compilation to my colleagues, without research of the correct version to download, with the essentials scripts, plugins (I think of PS users).
If I use Gimp portable on a usb key, as I envisage it :

Is that a usb key of 4 GB is enough ?

How I have to manage the Windows versions 32 or 64 bit ? I know that Gimp 64 is more powerfull than Gimp 32, I choose the 32 bit by default ?

Is that Gimp will be as effective as installed on my computer ? After my demonstration, I afraid that they are disapointed if Gimp is too slow.

Is that the different paths (E:\) and (H:\) of my computers for my usb key, may complicate the functioning of Gimp ? I don't know which are the paths of my colleagues and I don't want to do tests with all the computers.

Is possible to change the langage of Gimp easily ? The langage of my computer is in English but some of my colleagues are in French, for the trainings I should switch between French and English regularly, I didn't find a simple way to do it with the portable version of Partha.

I don't use it on my installed version, but I want to install GURM in order to accelerate the launch of Gimp from the usb key, but I wonder if it's possible with the specifities of the ini file ?

If you have any advices for me, I will be glad to receive them.

Resource managers:
If you use MrQ managers there is no config file and all your managers will open under their tabbed menus..ie brushes under brush menu and so forth.All are python modules and the python files are all you need to run the managers correctly.For a company i would say that is the easiest to install and is nice and tidy.

Installation:
You would have to install different windows versions (32 or 64 bit) according to their windows platforms.

USB:
4 gigs on USB drive is plenty for the portable.Drive name will not matter as it is all self contained including Python for python module support.

Languages:
Languages can be changed via Edit>Preferences

Photo Shop Plugins:
Shellout.py is the best way to go for PS 8BF plugins.You just add the path to a program that opens those types of filters and run them through it.
OR
You can use PSPI (this is my method of choice), to initialize them.Some of the older ones will not run because of no PS support scripts BUT, most will.

Thanks for your replies, and sorry for the delay, I have installed the portable version (from Partha) on my usb key, it works fine, despite a launching more slower than an installed version of Gimp.

However, and before install complementary plugins I want to understand why I cannot change the langage when I want.
Indeed Gimp is launched in English by default and I cannot choose other langage than english, unlike my installed version of Gimp.
Although my Windows OS is in English, I can choose the french langage with my installed version of Gimp, but not with that of Partha.

What's the problem ?

After some search on google I have found that a bat file could solve my issue, but I don't know how create a bat file in order to change the langage nor start Gimp directly in French.

For information I have tested a portable version of Photocomix (PC Lab 2.8.2 32 bit) with Maringouin and I can launch directly in French or in English like I want.
I have also tested the Gimp Painter version of Onkel Hatti and the langage is not changeable, only in English.

I have another issue, I have to create several Gimp portable versions on 7 usb keys for my colleagues, I have tried to copy paste the content of my usb key to an other usb key (empty) but it seems that the Gimp portable which has been copy/paste is instable and finds a lot of missing dll or error whereas my first version works fine.

Should I install each time Gimp portable on one usb key and copy paste the complementary addons later ?

PS : Thanks for your list proposal, I'm very interrested and also how install them in Gimp.

Just a suggestion, I would only use the portable versions for demonstration and use installed versions for production if possible. Before you copy make sure you have hidden files showing and use copy to (not copy\paste).

You can install the 32-bit and the 64-bit version on an USB flash drive. 4 GB is enough for both. Don't try to save any images on the drive lest you run out of space. You can use both on a 64-bit machine. You cannot obviously use the 64-bit on a 32-bit machine. Currently you cannot run them concurrently.

All the languages are currently present in the portable version. You have to set the locale in your Windows machine. I have not included the environment variable in the portable build.

All gimp translations available ?
Currently, my choices are "system" or "English US", as my system is in french then I can choose french/english but I guess anyone with an english system ends up with english or english. Wait, english windows user has to switch languages on windows side to be able to see the other translations inside gimp, is that it ?

anarkhya, here is something you can try temporarily.

C:\Program Files\Gimp-2.8.4\share\locale
It contains the folder fr.
If you remove/move All exept the fr, gimp should be forced to speak French.
Just move the other folders temporary to where ever you choose so you can restore if you change your mind.

There is nothing to remove.

To change the language here are 2 solutions :
- Edit > Preferences > Interface > Language
- GIMP_Lang for portable versions (http://www.aljacom.com/~gmic/GIMP_Lang_ ... _samj.html)

Ok samj.
It's just that i had that experience before and i was stuck with my own launguage wich i did not want, and i did that.
And it was not available in that list you mention.
Don't ask me how or why that happened.

Ps. it was an older build then this, but not so long ago.
With Parthas current build, i now only have English or system launguage to choose from in that list.
And i just checked, all folders are there in the Gimp folder, even Latin, but no Latin to choose in that list in Gimp for example.
Wich is fine by me as long it's English work in Gimp.
Maby it is suppose to be like that and you haveto manually download launguage-files.

I don't have a problem so it's fine, just info.

Update! i just tryed it myself my own suggestion and it does Not work anymore.

Just came up with a question myself.
File associasions/open with, how do i make that work with a portable 64-bit Gimp, this build even?
I know how to do this, normaly for other programs.
