Increased Application Memory usage

GIMP Version: 2.8.2
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Ubuntu Studio 12.10
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

I am having an issue with GIMP talking a couple minutes to start up. I've noticed the amount of memory the program takes. I have removed all large brushes as well as those I no longer need. Any one have any ideas?

Okay. Different problem now. In single window mode, my layer dock -- the right side -- disappears.

Whee, my Gimp 2.8 takes less than 50 megs of memory in startup (I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS). Something is not in order in your system. Maybe some scripts running wild?

The second problem, can you move your Gimp window? It might be that your Gimp window is bigger than your screen.

It's not the window sizing. I have a dual monitor setup so it fits. It was working fine until I removed a bunch of brushes.

What do you mean scripts running wild?

Have you done anything different on your computer recently; additions, upgrades, removals of any kind?
Any error messages or issues with any other programs?
Start Gimp --verbose and see what shows up as your working with it.

Regarding second problem, try to hover mouse over gimp window border,
if cursor changes to 'expand' icon - drag it towards the center.
GIMP sometimes does collapse docks, although it happened to me only couple of times in years.
If this didn't help try to toggle between single- and multiple-window modes.

Done the usual upgrades for programs, libraries, etc.

No errors, though.

Are there any plugins which startup with gimp startup?

When I toggle I have all the docks. It's just the single window mode that has started to malfunction.

Dual monitor mapping changed, maybe?

Scripts running wild, I meant that maybe something is looping and eating memory?

It's GTK that launches the program, no other plugins are involved.
Something went wrong with gtkrc on gimp exit, i suppose. GTK re-writes it every time you close gimp.

Okay. Think I've got it. Down to about 300mb at startup. Moved 180 brushes, 50 patterns, and a couple plugins.

I had installed just gimp and had linked the files to other partition of hard drive to access scripts, pligins, etc from the gimp install I had there. I moved everything to current partition and that seemed to help also. Much faster and stable it seems.

Well, thanks for all the help. Your suggestions got me thinking.

Starts up in under 30 seconds. Groovy.

Been away for awhile, but now I think I remember what I'm doing. Thanks again.
