I thought this might be a useful tutorial for some.

Image

I've used Tierazon but I've found an easier way in Xaos. Clicking on Calculation>fast julia brings up a second window with a julia set who's seeds are 0,0. If you click around the edge of the Mandelbrot you can see the julia change. When you've found the one you are looking for just select fractal and uncheck Mandelbrot mode and you will be offered the seeds for this julia. Click on OK. After applying smoothing and antialiasing or any other filters you want to use you can save the image and gimp it.

Erisian, thank you so much for your tutorial. I'm happy as I will be able to learn basic concepts about fractals. This was what I needed! :) :tyspin :clap

Thanks for the tutorial Erisian, I know next to nothing about fractals other than they look nice. I get the concept but don't have experience with the specifics. I have Xaos & Fraqtive installed but only briefly used them. Your tutorial is a motivator. :bigthup

Thanks Erisian - after my recent 'fractal failures' I need to do some tuts to both understand what they are and how to produce them! This is becoming a delicate balancing act -still learning GIMP, trying to learn GMIC and now fractals; I need more hours in the day ... then my garden will not suffer.
