Hello,

I'm new to GIMP, so new I can't even figure out how to post to the site. So, hopefully this will count as my first post. I want to use GIMP to edit my family's collection of old 35mm color slides, which I will soon scan into digital form. I haven't tried using GIMP yet, but it seems like a powerful program, capable of doing far more than my limited skills will allow. There are certain things I know I will need to learn to do, such as: change the brightness and contrast; adjust the color; remove tiny dust specks from the scanned slides. I would appreciate any suggestions anyone could give me for these tasks. Thank you.

to remove dust and grime from the slides, I would suggest use a special removable scotch tape...just press down on the slide and it will grab the debris and gently pull it off. for slides that are already scanned with dust particles, I guess you can clone them out, but that is tedious to do. EAsier to clean the slide first and rescan them in.

Welcome to Gimp Chat Desert Mountaineer.

I have only worked on old photos scanned into a computer and the clone tool works well for that.

as for learning more about how to use Gimp there are many tutorials here etc.
You may want to start here Essential Gimp Tutorials

Also don't be afraid to ask any questions here. Someone will be able to answer it for you.
