Hi there,
I've seen some cool posts about the upcoming SIGGRAPH Asia 2013 conference here, so let me say we have also written a paper that has been accepted for publication in this wonderful conference.

This paper describes how our recent in-blending algorithm works (a variant of "inpainting"), and how it can enhance results of patch-based inpainting algorithms. This "in-blending" algorithm is already freely available for use in the G'MIC plug-in for GIMP (filter Repair / Inpaint [patch]), and in the command-line tool gmic (command -repair), since version 1.5.5.1.

On the web page : https://daisy.users.greyc.fr/daisy-etal ... -asia-2013

you will find a gallery where different results are shown and compared with the Photoshop's Content Aware Filling algorithm, as well as a tutorial for using this inpainting feature in G'MIC. The published paper will follow as well.

And of course, remember that all this is released under an open-source license :) Kudos to Maxime Daisy, the PhD student I'm currently in charge of, who worked hard to make this possible !

So, have a closer look to this algorithm, it really worth it !

I've added a small video on Youtube that shows all the steps of the inpainting algorithm.
Just in case you were curious about how it works.

This is what G'MIC inpainting algorithm does when reconstructing a missing region : First it copies/pastes image patches coming from different locations into the mask region. That's the most time consuming step. Then, it applies a patch blending effect to make seams between neighboring copied patches less visible.

Special thanks to Maxime. You guys just don't stop coming up with great ideas.
