My sister needs to turn this picture into oil painting. The idea is to make a huge print on real canvas (birthday gift).
Image

The desired effect is to be similar to this pair of images below (I used AKVIS Artwork Oil Painting software) - thick brushstrokes
with simplicity, not much detailing. Impressionism, in one word. AKVIS is a proprietary software and my trial expired
long time ago.

Image Image

Is there any GIMP plugin or script that would do a similar, very close effect? I would be really grateful if someone helped me.
Thank you!

You have the basic gimp artistic filters and you also have the G'mic artistic filters.

None of them does what AKVIS does. Not even close. I've tried all...
The images I posted above are big, maybe seeing real-size will get an idea of what I mean
The panel is supposed to be huge and it would look like this up-close

Thank you, he4rty!

I made dozens of attempts with all I have in GIMP (that includes gmic and PS plugins),
the best I have come up with so far (gmic, gmic, gmic)
Image

I ran out of ideas and patience too :gaah
It's not what we need, but I like the results.

That looks really nice, I wondering if theres a way to create a greyscale brush to replicate the oilpainting effect and then apply it as a an overlay layer.

It does look like a real oil painting, doesn't it?
To create a greyscale brush to replicate the oilpainting effect? I'm not familiar with this technique
but I'll give it a try tomorrow (too tired right now)

Thank you, he4rty, for your help. We have about 3 weeks to get this present done.

Not an artist K1TesseraEna; just a faker. Used Impressionist (in GIMP; works in GIMP if you have PSPI and know the secret) and a few G'MIC tricks. Yes, it's still cheating, but hey, I don't claim to always be an honest GIMP guy. lol

:)

Excellent, lylejk!
Thank you! Your cheating work is going to be a plan B for us.
I do have pspi and the Akvis package worked just fine with it...until the trial time expired.
Maybe I would go a little further with cheating and get myself a second trial with Akvis, but it didn't work so far.
But what are friends and good neighbors for, lol!

You can get Impressionist (no charge) here.

http://asnailpace.com/blog/impressionist-plug-in/

Works fine in Irfanview too (but not in XNView for whatever reason). As a side note, I've known Steve (Trimoon; the one that host's this cool plugin) for nearly 8 years now; very good man (online friend of course; much like you all here are). :)

Thank you again, lylejk!
Looks very promising! I have IrfanView. Will take a stab at it and post the results tomorrow.

One thing; when you add the Impressionist plugin, it will show up as a blank space (don't know why), but it is there; trust me. If you run it in GIMP, you can not have an alpha channel (transparancies) or it will not work right. No problem in Irfanview since it will open an image flattened. :)

It was a little character like j without a dot right after I added impressionist folder to I-view but now it's a blank space.
I usually call I-view with RobA's Shellout but adding it to GIMP's worth trying.

OK, this is exactly what I need. Looks like a real oil painting.
Just because of the huge dimensions of future panel I figure each brushstroke will be the size of a British penny.
That's why microdetails were so important.

This is AKVIS again.

Thanks, everybody. I did try all of the above suggested filters, but the final results are quite different when you zoom in.

Thank you, Molly! I love it too. This is my sister's picture made with Sony Cybershot camera last summer.
