I thought I'd post this one and see if anyone can give some pointers and help to achieve the effect I'm after.

What I want to do is have the text so that it looks as if it is rising out off the water. I've probably seen way too many sci-fi movies but I'm hoping to create something along the lines of when a giant spaceship rises out from the ocean depths, the surface of the sea boiling and foaming beneath the rising object and water cascading down the sides of it, that kind of thing.
I will probably add the word Mint below where it says Linux though that's not set in stone, and the background is not necessarily the one I will use for the finished product although I do quite like the way it looks.
Could probably do with making the face of the letters a bit more rocky looking as they're a bit flat at the moment.
It's very much a work in progress and will eventually be use as a new desktop background, I've had the same old one up for over a year now and thought it time for a change, so any help and ideas much appreciated.
I made the Linux text after looking at this http://www.gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2893

Is the backwards 'N' intentional?

No it's not, and I've only just noticed it's the wrong way round, Doh!!
It must've happened when I was messing around the with 3D extrusion filter. I was changing the angle of the letters so that they appear to be curving, obviously went a bit too far on the N. Thanks for pointing it out.

I don't know if this is close to what you want. Here is what I did.

Found an ocean image, duplicated, added an alpha chanel to the top layer of ocean.

Made the text and put it where I wanted it. Alpha to selection on the text and saved the selection to path.

You may need to zoom out or stretch out the sides of the image to be sure the path completely takes in the part of the ocean you want to surround.

Turned off the visibility of the text. Turned on the visibility of the text in Paths so I could see where the text was (I was mainly interested in where the bottom of it was).

Used the paths tool to select the ocean and some waves slightly above the bottom of the text path and select clear across, up to the top of the ocean picture across the top and down the other side to where the path was started and join up to the beginning.

Press enter key to activate the path, press the delete key. Your top layer of ocean should only be a partial piece of ocean. Turn off the path visibility, turn on the text visibility and move it between the two layers of ocean. Lower the opacity of the top, cut layer of ocean to where you want it.

maybe you could have the lower part of the lettering slightly covered by the peaks of the waves, with a wee bit of foam. Also, some water falling off the letters higher up on the lettering.

Excellent work Caz, Didn't notice the "N" either but now I like the fact its backwards.

As to rising up out of the water can't help much there I afraid apart from suggesting trying to have water running and dripping off the text but how I don't know.

Thanks everyone. This latest version was made using the ideas that Oregonian posted, cheers for them they worked a charm.
I was becoming quite attached to the idea of having the N the wrong way round, but in the end common sense won out and I swapped it round.
The text itself takes a fair time to do as each letter has to be made separately, changing the angle and lighting on the letters is very much a trail and error process. It was more done by eye than an strict measurement process but I think it's worked out quite well.
I found some cool brushes to use for the water running off the word, they're by Obsidian-dawn and can be found here http://www.obsidiandawn.com/water-photo ... mp-brushes
There's still work to do on this but it seems to be headed in the right direction now.

Cheers, Molly.
Nice animation, alc59. The sea swell looks cool. One of these days I'll try and learn how to do that stuff.
