I just didn't had any motivation to finish it and had to deal with some stuff in 'real life', so I haven't worked on it for a long while.
This is a commisioned piece, so decided to make a start again. I didn't like the way it turned out, but now I'm starting to like it more
I'm a mouse user so painting the forest in the background was very tiring xD
It's still not finished, but I thought I'd share how far I am now. ^^

Critique is very welcome :)

I really like the reflection of the sun in the trees. I think it looks great!

I'm trying to decide if I really get a sense of depth in the mid and background. I wonder if the atmosphere is just a touch too weak.

Beautiful job on the Pines, the sky and the foreground. I would like to see the mountains faded out more because they are farther away and the edges softened with some atmosphere in front of them.

Thank you Mario Bross and Mike! :D

merrak: Thank you! You mean the forest in the background? I was really struggling with the depth there.. i'll give it another try but I'm a little afraid that I'll ruin it xD
molly: Thanks :) Also was struggling with that.. going to try and fix it.

BaukjeSpirit, do you still have your XCF with your layers?
If you still have the mountain layer, you could make a new layer above it and make your changes and when you are happy you could merge it down to the main mountain layer.

Wow!
Yes I remember this one, I was wondering what happened to it. xD
I think it turned/ is turning out very nice!
Love the trees! They seem a bit too much "one piece" with the "leaves" but that's how I draw too so it's probably a style.
Impressive with a mouse! I hope to be that good one day with my poor little dying mouse. xD

Holy cow, I've gotta say this is incredibly impressive, and you've got great strokes going on, especially for using a mouse.

Coupla things, though: (INCOMING WALL OF TEXT)

First, the way your forest fades into the mountains isn't entirely convincing, just because it's so sudden. Mix it up, throw some of the rocky terrain down lower and bring some of the trees up higher. Tree lines on mountains in life have two major elements: where the tall, rich trees stop growing, and then where the shrubbery stops, which is usually a fair ways further up the mountain. Furthermore, tree lines aren't exact, and have a lot to do with where wind is channeled and where things get steeper (ie: the grade of the slope/mountain), rather than just pure elevation. I'm not saying you need to make it more "realistic", but that's the first thing that nags at my eye.

A little further down in the valley, where there are those mountain-esque veins that the trees are on, would be a perfect spot for more rocks. Trees have a really hard time growing on spines like those.

Next, as mentioned above, add more atmosphere! You've clearly established scale with the forest and the trees that get smaller and smaller, so add different atmospheres to differentiate between these. My personal rule of thumb is: things further away have less saturation and are lighter. You can use adjustment layers to do this really quickly if you don't have your work divided into lots of layers within GIMP. You can also take a really soft brush with some white/grey and just brush in atmosphere, but be very subtle.

Last, as I'm interpreting this piece, the trees in the middle/valley are at a lower elevation than the mountains, meaning the only light they'll be catching is light reflected from the sky and the other side of the valley, that the viewer standing on. As it is, you've got light hitting the whole valley, which adds to the depth troubles. (casting most of the valley in shadow will fix a lot of other problems, and it means you can mush out a little and cheat on the tree line because it'll be shadow contrasted against the light of the sun, almost.

Dramatic lighting is also really enticing with the human eye. I'd encourage you to explore and more clearly define your shadow and light in this piece, especially since sunset/sunrise has more shadows and contrast than any other time of day.

Anyhow, great stuff!

Awesome!
The colors of the sky orange and green valley created a beautiful atmosphere. Liked it! Many details, and pine trees in the foreground were great. This composition must have required a lot of time as well as talent and inspiration. Nice job! :paint

It is quite beautiful. I think the sun is a bit large, like the way it can seem on flat land or water, but I don't think you get that kind of magnification up in the mountains. The colors are fantastic!

Very good job, with many fine details.
The only problem I see is that it appears an annoying watermark :)

baukjespirit: excellent job! i love the colours and i'm so impressed you can paint like this using a mouse! things like the size of the sun doesn't bother me, i see it as a sort of convention that works in this type of picture. i can agree about the depth, it's sort of needed for the atmosphere.

A beautiful piece of work. Colouring, composition and theme all work well. For a mouse painting it's incredible! :hi5
