This may seem like a silly question, but take a look at my signature image below.
I've been trying to find this font on my system, but can't seem to find it and I know it's there somewhere.
Does anyone know what this font's name might be?

I know how aggravating it is when I can't remember the name of a font I KNOW I have and can't find. I have way too many fonts.

A useful tip to help you remember is in the image go to File/Properties and somewhere in there type the name of the font. Size and color may be helpful, too. That information will remain with the image.

That's a great tip Oregonian, I wish I could remember that when the time comes. Would be nice if there was some kind of default setting I could use that would automatically add the "font's" name to the image information.

As you would guess, I have a script for this:)

Get the text-info script. It adds a "Text information" item at the bottom of the right click menu in the Layers list. When called, it outputs (messages dialog, or error console message) the contents of the "parasite" in which Gimp keeps the information about text layers. This information can even sometimes survive the "text layer" status.

Wallace, you might try to resort to some web tools devoted to finding fonts by similarity, such as Identifont or, even better, WhatTheFont, which gives you the possibility to upload an image featuring a few characters of the wanted font with the objective of detecting its closest matches. If you decide to use this latter service, I advise you to someway simplify your signature logo, by converting it to an essential black and white representation and getting rid of the unnecessary decorations.

Is this Argel Font Wallace, that is what came up when I searched in the dafont forum

I put your script in my plug-ins folder, closed and reopened Gimp and it does not show in my Layers right-click menu. I am running Linux.

The font is as Molly found out, "Argel Font"

That's the one alright.

That was the first thing I did, but I didn't simplify the image, therefor I couldn't get a good match.

You have to set its "executable" flag.

Oops! Fixed it. I opened an image with text in it, right-clicked the layer, saw the text info choice, clicked it, nothing happened.

Hovering my mouse on it I get this:

If you have the error console message dialogue up, then the output is in it, if there is output (there is no output if there is no text information).

The text information is attached to the layer when Gimp saves the file, so there is nothing to show up on a brand new next layer. However, if you create the text layer and then save the image, the text information becomes available at once (without the need to reload the image).

I made this image to test the script. I have the error console up when I check the text info. I get nothing.

Well, so there is a bitmap layer, and it was a text layer earlier, it lost its text information.

In the attached XCF, the "Stitches" layer is a bitmap layer, but the text information is still attached to it, and the script displays it:

So in the case of Wallace's sig, there's no way to recover the info using your script?

It works fine on your Stitches file, but what about other files you want to find the info about?

The script just extracts the information from Gimp, if it still exists. It is normally available for text layers, and can often be found in layers that were text layers in a former life. If Wallace still has his source XCF, there is a good chance that the script will find something. The file I attached was created a couple of days ago, for another thread.

I'm not sure if I have the "source XCF file", but I haven't found it yet, if it even exists at all.

If you are using Gimp to produce your image, you normally have it as an XCF file...
