Drawing Larger GIMP icons

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: New User

I've come to potentially request some unpaid labour

There is an increasing interest in having a GIMP theme more suited to high DPI screens, which means needing larger icons, and while we're waiting for the developers to make GIMP fully compatible with a high DPI environment, we could do with an interim solution.

So my first question is this: Does anyone know of a set of the standard GIMP icons in larger sizes (32x32 for preference)?

With the assumption that the answer to that question is no, then I've started to draw them myself.

BUT there are a large number of icons to make, and just re-sizing the standard icons isn't good enough.

So if anyone would like to contribute an icon or two... post them here.

I've attached the collection so far, as a theme, and if you feel you can do a better job than I have on any of the icons I've done already, then feel free to post replacements as well as any of the missing icons.

Edit: See later posts for the current version of the zip containing the theme.

Ohh - my - gawd..

The time i'm spending in Gimp lately.. my eyes needed this information so bad.

Nice timing also.
And i had no idea! that one could make icons yourself, thought they were baked in so you had to hack 'em or something.

So I feel the need to thank you with chocolate or something.

I only know my own needs and taste and, i'm only using small-toolbar or large-toolbar lately, since i prio speed over space.

Know what i meen? so yeah.
I agree with Issabella for sure though and i will share my theme when it's finito.

Ah yeah btw -> "invalid", "menu", "small-toolbar", "large-toolbar", "button","dnd","dialog","dialog","dnd" for those who do not know yet.
GimpToolPalette::tool-icon-size = large-toolbar

I would have no idea how to attack an icon. :puzzled

I've seen icon specific editors like KiconEdit. Isn't Inkscape more suited for the job than Gimp? I'm sure some people would try if you shared some how to tips on your workflow.

Maybe Inkscape would be more suitable but I've not imposed any requirements for how they are made.

It's a fair point about explaining my work-flow...

I start by opening one of the existing 22x22 sized icon files, setting the canvas size to 32 and adding a new 32x32 transparent layer and zooming in a lot.

Now I analyse what it I'm trying to make a larger version of - in this case three circles and a palette knife(?)

So circles are easy, and the green is obviously underneath, so I draw that first, then the red, then the blue
each on separate layers in case I want to move them.

Now I've got to draw the palette knife, so it's back to the layer with the original icon on, and see how it's drawn - it's got a black handle with a grey highlight on the top edge and a mostly white blade, outlined in grey to make it stand out. It's drawn on the diagonal and reaches from the bottom of the blue circle to the edge of the layer.

Now it just a matter of drawing those pixels - one pixel at a time if necessary.

I've not been bothering with the drop shadows.

And that's all there is to it.

Oh there is one more step that I do...

I edit the imagerc.rc file to find the file reference and change it to refer to the 32x32 file:

Which tool icons do you need thus far? Should/could I use this image as a reference?

Do you think I would need the icons that you have already approved, so I can use them as a size reference for the icons I make?

Sorry Kiven, but I'm a bit confused. I'm 50+ years old you know, not a spring chicken anymore. I don't know which zip file to download. I don't want make an icon to find out that it's too small or too big.
I'm aware that there's only so much room to make an icon in a 32x32 space, but I do need reference so that I don't do work that is not the proper size.

Unzip it to your personal GIMP themes folder.

Go for it.

At this stage I'd rather contributors make their own choices, but letting everyone know which one they are going to work on is a good idea - stops any duplication of effort.

That seems to be the 22x22 icon in a 32x32 canvas? So the scissors themselves aren't any bigger and bigger images are what we are aiming for.
