GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Linux
GIMP Experience: Experienced User

Windows 10 expired. I like a lot of other people switched to Linux. Gimp seems to work well but I am lost. How do you add scripts and plugins in Mint? Windows you just went to program files and added them them to gimp[ and the file you wanted them in. Can you add plugins and scm files in Mint or do they have to be Linux filters? I saved a lot of my favorite plugins and scm files but will they work? and brushes can I just add them?Is there a Linux help page? I didnt see one Thanks

All directories in Linux are a subset of a forward slash. In Windows they are a subset of a backslash. Linux is like a big mansion where you have access to every room without a bunch of creeps controlling you. So you are logged in as a regular user (rather than admin) and if your local login is 'norsman' then your local gimp directory is /norseman/.config/GIMP/3.0 etc.

The dot in front of .config makes it a hidden folder. Gimp versions are listed after 'GIMP/'. Check it out? This is where scripts and plugins go. Of course they all work because Linux runs the net and the majority of smart phones (android) and TV's. Scripts/plugins need to be executable before they can be used.

Best thing about Linux/unix is that what you learn stays as knowledge (mostly). Files are grouped by what they do, not by endless random obfuscations and corporate welfare schemes.

Thanks for such a fast reply. So there isnt a way to just open a program file where it lists all the installed programs? Anyway, I am happy with Mint so far it seems like Gimp runs a lot faster than with Windows. I got the Gimp from there programs loaded with Mint so I am not sure what version I have. But I will copy what you wrote and use it as a refrance.I was playing around with it the other day and forgot how to do some of the most basic things that I have done a thousand times I guess you get rusty after 2 years.......Thanks again

It's really important to know your GIMP version. To find out open your GIMP. Then under help there is info or about or so.
Open that and it'll tell you the version. Is it 2.10 or 3.2 or something else?
And by any chance: do you remember your GIMP version from Win10?

Nothing like a couple of screenshots ;)
A long time linux user, just now reconfiguring a laptop with Mint 22.3 and as far as I recall Synaptic Package manager still comes as a default. That will list everything installed and other things as well. (1)

Loading resources into Gimp - nothing special The shortcut for your home folder is ~ and it is a hidden folder - starts with a /. so it is ~/.config/GIMP/3.2/

The standard file managers are nothing special (2) Get something better, there is DoubleCommander (3) in the repo. I am KDE user so I use krusader.

This is a Gimp forum, so where to get Gimp. The repo supplies Gimp 2.10.36 Nothing bad about that. Your old python plugins and script-fu work. They do not work with Gimp 3. I know flatpaks are popular and there is an official appimage but the best place for Gimp 3 is the ubuntu PPA

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuhandbook1/ ... ntu/gimp-3

its Gimp 2.10 I am not sure what the one I had for Windows was but I tried saving as much as I could to a USB stick so it might be saved. But I remember there was a new version that came out but I didnt update because I usually come to this forum to see if anyone has trouble with there plugins and scms before I update. Its been 2 years so

Thanks Rich this is what I want to learn. I am really new to Mint/Lenox so I dont really know all the terminology that Mint uses as opposed to Windows, So your screen shots are very helpful. Its funny though I think some parts of Mint make more sense than Windows did
