Once was in Gimp a excellent plugin to "do things with fonts" but ,several years ago for misterious reasons was removed

But still works (maybe by miracle ...since nobody is taking care of preserve its compatibility )

For linux users should be not hard find and compile it (if i am not wrong is just needed gimptool )

For Windows users i'm hosting in the Lost&Found section of my Gimp resources gallery

Included in the zip all detail on how use it (even a short Tut )+ the original doc

I've had it for quite a while now. I think they dropped it because they thought the text tool was good enough.

I'm not sure if this is gonna work because I've made the video private. I don't want it to clutter up my channel as it's not a nicely done tutorial.

Just a quick and silent video of Freetype. Nothing you can't do with the shear and perspective tool but goes a lot quicker. The downside is that you can't edit the rendered text.

I'll probably delete it later as it can only have up to 25 people watching it.

THanks, Jolie, that does look like a very handy script to have when you want to move type around in something like a poster that already has the other graphics in it. I hope I am putting it into the right plug-in folder...I found two, and neither seem to have the plug-ins I though I already have!

Amazingly this plugin still works! :) Thank you PC wherever you are.

Remember you have to create a folder named freetype in the plugins folder. Then place the executable INSIDE that folder. RESTART GIMP. :)
The filter is found under Filters>Text>FreeType

It will load all your fonts from the folders you tell it to.
I used the default Windows>Fonts :)

I'm thinking 3D Cubes would make a nice "Custom Font"

On Windows but other OS's will have to forget it.
It's great mining Gimp resources and getting them working again :hehe

Actually SamJ probably still has the c source file(s) for this plugin. Should be able to compile it in Linux and Fedora.

I'm using Windows only at work nowadays, but I think the one in Windows binaries topic by samj is newer version?
It also includes source files.

Yeehaa, I compiled FreeType0.6 for Linux64 using the source from samj upload.
First I ran into errors about gegl-0.4 and PKG_CONFIG_PATH but googled and managed to solve them.
Now my problem is that I don't know how to share the executable because it's hiding somewhere :rofl

Great! I only have a 2.8 GIMP compile environment for Windows. I need to update the compiler in order to compile GIMP-2.10 for Windows. Been a while. :hehe

I believe you can find the install directory in the pluginrc file. :)

I am sure you know how to find it ;)

Straight forward compile here kubuntu 16.04 A .configure then a make Makes a single plugin, unsuprisingly named freetype. If you did a install then it will be in your user plugins folder or a "root" install in /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/

Interesting to use old applications (I still have Gimp 2.2 stuff in an archive) and Gimp plugins, but freetype was superceded by the much better Gimp text tool.

The on-canvas text tool is better again, more options to format. The option to use the Text editor is still there. Now includes the orientation toggles that you get with a right click in the on-canvas tool.

Rich, yes I found Freetype in the plugins folder but it's not executable like the ones I have downloaded from web.
It's a shared library.
I compiled it like the readme file suggested, .configure, make, make install.
Same happened with normalmap.

Will take another look when I get home.

I think freetype is still useful plug-in to browse and view fonts, it loads the selected folder very fast.
The font manager in *buntu has always been sluggish for me.
